Sudan is the largest country in Africa, with an estimated population of 36.2 million in 2005. The population growth rate is 2.6 %, which is slightly above that of Sub-Saharan Africa which is 2.1 %. Per capita income was $340 in 2001 and reached $650 in 2005.
Sudan is at the first stages of economic prosperity and boom. The late 1990s heralded the beginning of economic transformation which was reflected by the sharp rise of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Sudan today boasts an 8.6% growth of GDP, ranking Sudan as one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
This growth is largely the result of both political stability and the rapid expansion in the oil industry. Following the signing of the peace agreement between Northern and Southern parts of the country, Sudan has fully re-engaged the international community both politically and economically.
